Her anger was palpable and he flinched despite himself. Sharksong had never seen Turtlehop angry, never heard rumors or stories about it. It was like the emotion didn’t exist with her. And yet somehow, he managed to bring it out. He was so blindsided that he offered almost no resistance.[break][break]
He was nudged closer and closer to the water, and he didn’t immediately realize. Sharksong was trying to figure out what set her off. He thought he offered a compromise. What wasn’t he understanding? What made his feelings wrong? Well, the fact that he could hardly stand the rain was one indicator... But it wasn’t like he wanted to feel the way he did. He just reacted without thinking about it.[break][break]
His tail brushed against water, and immediately Sharksong jumped in surprise. A strange tingle jolted down his spine and his fur prickled. He sunk his claws into the sand to prevent himself from bolting, and he trembled with the effort. Sharksong slanted a sharp look down at Turtlehop. He was warring between his fear and the anger that still seeped out.[break][break]
“Well?” he said through gritted teeth. “Does this make you feel good, trying to prove something?” It wasn’t so different from how he felt, but he would never have expected as much from Turtlehop.

[attr=class, punkisavelighttext]The waves lapped calmly on shore, and the calls from the living forest sounded behind her. Dragonfly stood at the beach on the southern part of the Tribe’s island, staring across the stretch of water to the Island of Shadows. The trees grew so thickly that she couldn’t see anything, though the distance and haze didn’t help either.[break][break]
Only a few clouds dotted the sky, but the air was full of moisture and it left her feeling uncomfortable. Hunting was difficult and led to more of her tribemates hunting at night, which gave her less opportunity to seek solitude. She was forced to find some when the day was most unpleasant, and it left her in an odd mood. The only place she knew she’d find to herself was the beach that bordered the supposedly haunted island, so there she went.[break][break]
She was hard-pressed to believe any of the lore that kept the tribe away, but it didn’t mean that she didn’t stay away… for the most part. A dare with Monarch when she was a swabbie had her swimming there in low tide, and she stayed without telling anyone for a quarter of a day. The island had significant relevance in their history, but a peek through the dense forest yielded nothing that seemed as grand as the tales. She never took the time to actually explore beyond that, in fear of getting lost, but a small part of her was worried about if the tales were actually true.[break][break]
Dragonfly was lost in these memories as her gaze continued to sweep over the island. She walked up to the water after a moment and let the surf wash over her paws. She was torn from her reverie when she realized just how refreshing it was.

[attr="class","hearmenand2"]Rockshade baffled her. At some points he was nothing but lazy. He didn’t strive to do anything but the bare minimum. While she supposed there was nothing wrong with coasting through life, she found it hard to understand. Why would someone be content to let their life slip by in such a way?
But then there were times that he acted completely the opposite. If there was danger, he would act without hesitation. He would do what was asked. If someone was so truly lazy, why would they extend their neck for others? Why would they become reliable?
It made Orchidbloom conclude that he wasn’t lazy for the sake of it. He seemed more uninspired than anything. As if he had untapped potential just waiting to be revealed.
It would be enough for her to decide how she viewed him, but then there was the way he didn’t keep quiet. If he had something to say, he said it, regardless of what it was. While she could appreciate the honesty, she felt there was some tact missing.
She was at odds with his lifestyle, but she respected his hidden charisma.
Orchidbloom was no closer to solving her dilemma as she squinted at Rockshade. While she’d been on her fair share of patrols with him, his comments were sudden and unexpected. It was just the two of them this time, and it seemed to leave his tongue freer than normal.
“I didn’t think punctuality was abnormal in a warrior,” she returned, giving him a side glance. She blinked at his latter statement, keeping her features still. She knew she was graceful, so she accepted his sly compliment with her chin tilted upwards. “Am I ruining that for you too?”
Cicadapaw & Orchidbloom - Orchid is down to earth and quite free-thinking, so she wouldn't buy into the thought that Cicada's genetics are faulty at all. She might be a good figure to help him gain some confidence.
Littleshark & Sharksong - I know you don't have her up on here yet, but I looked through her app and I think her and Sharksong could have some kind of friendly rivalry? Maybe with undertones of actual tension. He's pretty cocky and a bit arrogant so I can see them taking shots at each other.
Taropetal & Sharksong - Given Shark's loud personality, I can only assume that Taro might find him outwardly annoying considering she's a bit distant, but he can be earnest when he needs to be, so maybe they'd become friends over time? Also they are both in love triangles, so it would be pretty funny if they found out and discussed it haha.
Pikeclaw & Orchidbloom - Orchid is just as serious as Pike, so I can see them appreciating each other's bluntness. I think they could get along well.
Dunestorm & Tangpaw - Tang is fun-loving and equally energetic, so despite their age difference I think they'd be great friends and hit it off immediately.
Jasmine & Dragonfly - Dragonfly is pretty emotionally closed off, but if Jasmine was persistently friendly I can see them being good friends, especially since they both don't tolerate laziness that well. Alternatively Dragonfly could find her nosy and a bit annoying if you wanted some tension.
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext]The Tangled Forest was easy to get lost in. It wasn’t for anyone even remotely unfamiliar with the territory. There were landmarks to guide experienced cats, but they were subtle and not always as apparent as perhaps a landmark should be. By now, Dragonfly was keen on spotting them, but then again she spent days at a time wandering the forest. She was completely comfortable there, and she was of mind to get her swabbie as comfortable in the forest.[break][break]
She woke up Mamba before heading out into the territory, but she didn’t wait for her. There hadn’t been any rain for days now, so following her scent couldn’t be hard. Mamba had a working nose. Dragonfly settled on a large, low-hanging branch out of the heat. Part of Mamba’s training would start with having to find her, and Dragonfly wasn’t inclined to make it easy. The harder Mamba started, the more she could take in the future.

He must. He must. Of course he must. That was what was expected of him. It was easy for anyone to say he had to overcome what now weighed him down. From an outside perspective, it was easy—just get better. But they didn’t know how he felt choked when clouds covered the sky, or the way he felt like he was sinking in the darkness at night.[break][break]
They didn’t know that he wasn’t sure he would save a drowning kit. His fear, his sense of self-preservation was so strong that he would let a small kit die.[break][break]
It fueled the growing self-hatred further still, and what made it worst of all was that he didn’t have the heart to disagree with Turtlehop. Sharksong nodded along, smiling weakly. He was saved from having to verbally agree with her when she continued.[break][break]
He wasn’t surprised that she wanted to pick up the broken pieces of his mind, but he didn’t know how she would manage it. He stared down at her when she made the attempt to bring him to his paws, and it ran parallel with his thoughts. She struggled to move him physically. His mind felt even heavier. Could she really do it? Sharksong knew it was stupid to doubt her, but this situation, needing this kind of treatment, was completely alien to him. He couldn’t imagine it getting any better.[break][break]
When she began a verbal assault, Sharksong nearly agreed with her then and there—the words “it might” danced on his tongue, but he kept his mouth firmly closed. He stood abruptly, a frown dragging his features down. He didn’t want to be intimidating but falling into that trance was so easy. He was afraid of what he would do, of what he’d be capable of, if he lost himself to the bitter anger swirling just underneath. There was no pain when he embraced it, but there was no feeling, either. He only wanted what made him feel good… and what he would do to get it in that state terrified him.[break][break]
“Water is stronger than you think,” he said breathlessly. “But if you can move me there, I won’t resist.” His response was automatic, as if he gave it no thought. In all honesty, he really didn’t. It was a teasing response without any emotion added to it. He didn’t think of what it would mean if Turtlehop actually succeeded. All he knew was that he couldn’t let himself get angry.
[attr="class","hearmenand2"]The morning was warm and humid, hinting at the insufferable heat that would appear later in the day. Orchidbloom knew it wasn’t wise to train in those conditions, so early-morning training it was. She told Ratpaw as much the previous night, so she waited by Shipwreck Cove, expectant that Ratpaw would remember and meet her. While she was the younger she-cat’s mentor, Orchidbloom wasn’t her mother. She wouldn’t coddle her apprentice or hold her tail. Warriors were expected to remember, so she saw no fault in having Ratpaw go through the motions. And if for some reason Ratpaw forgot, then she would miss training that day and fall behind. Orchidbloom loved teaching, but she could only do that if her apprentice was eager and willing to learn herself. She was a strict mentor, but her discipline had a reason.
Her eyes traced the wrecked ship, where it sat on the sand, in the water, and the rock between the two halves. A moon ago she fought a horde of rats with Cranefeather and Snowwhisker in the grounded portion of the ship’s wooden frame, and it seemed miraculous that they survived, considering the odds. The waves of rats were unending, and she could still feel painful twinges from the wounds that were mostly healed. The ship was investigated, but the rats were nowhere to be found. It was odd, but it didn’t stop Orchidbloom from visiting the site. She just wouldn’t go inside.
His mindset was only doing fractionally better now that he had free leave of the camp. There was still too much on his mind for him to actually be at peace. Even though Turtlehop tried to set him straight, he didn’t think he could do what she wanted. It was normally easy for him to fake confidence he didn’t feel. It was practically who he was. But trying to fake being a confident deputy? One that passed their tribulation with ease? It was more than he felt he could manage. Someone would figure his ruse out sooner or later. [break][break]
Sharksong had more than one thing on his mind, though. After Newtstripe mockingly—in his opinion—brought up how his parents would come to their senses, he couldn’t stop thinking about it. They wouldn’t turn around. He wasn’t sure they even cared he was still alive. His relationship with Shellheart and Ivorysplash shattered along ago, shorn apart by his need to please Wavestep when he was younger.[break][break]
But where did that loyalty to Wavestep get him? Wavestep wasn’t even proud of his accomplishments. His father was jealous. It left a sour taste he didn’t know how to get rid of, and it made the future uncertain for Sharksong.[break][break]
The perceived apathy by his family was practically consuming him. He knew he couldn’t go on like he was. He had to confront someone… and the easiest one in his mind was Ivorysplash. It was uncomfortable to realize that she might not want anything to do with him after how he treated her, but he had to try. Sharksong didn’t expect forgiveness or even understanding. He just wanted an explanation, a tangible answer of her true thoughts. It wasn’t something he wanted to guess any longer.[break][break]
He didn’t see Ivorysplash anywhere in camp, so he headed outside on the territory. He had no idea where to find her, so he headed in a random direction towards the trees. Maybe his sister was sheltering in the cooler forest. The sun was high above and beating down, leaving his mouth dry. It was far better than the rain though, so he was quietly thankful, even if the heat was oppressive by itself.
[attr="class","you-i-post"]Tangpaw jumped despite herself when Tunapaw appeared. She knew she couldn’t stay hidden from¬ him for long. She turned towards her brother with a bright smile, and she was content to let Shellpaw explain everything they’d been up to. While she never questioned anyone about the fish that day, it had to be something explainable. They could find out what it was and warn the fighters. Or they could try to catch it themselves…[break][break]
Her mouth hung open when Tunapaw dashed in the direction of the tree that she jumped from earlier. It took her all day to gather the courage to jump from it. She didn’t want to be outclassed by Tunapaw so quickly—she knew he wouldn’t have the same reservations she did. “Hey, wait up!” she called. She was about to run off after him when she remembered Shellpaw. She turned to the other she-cat. “Come on! After him, before he hogs all the glory!” With that, Tangpaw began to run.[break][break]
Getting there was easier said then done. Vines and roots coiled and tangled together, and it took all her concentration not to trip and fall at the speed she was going. She could hear, rather than see, Tunapaw ahead of her, and she was determined not to lag behind.[break][break]
She managed to get to the base of the tree without incident. Hoping that Shellpaw was behind her, Tangpaw leaped straight up and sunk her claws into the tree’s trunk. Ignoring the strain on her shoulders and claws, she hauled herself up the tree as quickly as she could.
