His mindset was only doing fractionally better now that he had free leave of the camp. There was still too much on his mind for him to actually be at peace. Even though Turtlehop tried to set him straight, he didn’t think he could do what she wanted. It was normally easy for him to fake confidence he didn’t feel. It was practically who he was. But trying to fake being a confident deputy? One that passed their tribulation with ease? It was more than he felt he could manage. Someone would figure his ruse out sooner or later. [break][break]
Sharksong had more than one thing on his mind, though. After Newtstripe mockingly—in his opinion—brought up how his parents would come to their senses, he couldn’t stop thinking about it. They wouldn’t turn around. He wasn’t sure they even cared he was still alive. His relationship with Shellheart and Ivorysplash shattered along ago, shorn apart by his need to please Wavestep when he was younger.[break][break]
But where did that loyalty to Wavestep get him? Wavestep wasn’t even proud of his accomplishments. His father was jealous. It left a sour taste he didn’t know how to get rid of, and it made the future uncertain for Sharksong.[break][break]
The perceived apathy by his family was practically consuming him. He knew he couldn’t go on like he was. He had to confront someone… and the easiest one in his mind was Ivorysplash. It was uncomfortable to realize that she might not want anything to do with him after how he treated her, but he had to try. Sharksong didn’t expect forgiveness or even understanding. He just wanted an explanation, a tangible answer of her true thoughts. It wasn’t something he wanted to guess any longer.[break][break]
He didn’t see Ivorysplash anywhere in camp, so he headed outside on the territory. He had no idea where to find her, so he headed in a random direction towards the trees. Maybe his sister was sheltering in the cooler forest. The sun was high above and beating down, leaving his mouth dry. It was far better than the rain though, so he was quietly thankful, even if the heat was oppressive by itself.
Ivorysplash had been out hunting, trying to put her stealth to use. Being smaller did come with benefits, as she had learned during her apprenticeship, She knew not to be bothered by her stature anymore, but it was still hard to close old wounds. She knew that her brother had survived the trial to deputy, and while she was still a bit jealous, deputy had never been a goal of hers, she’d much rather support the clan than lead it. She knew that he must’ve worked hard in the trail, and she wished she had been there at the announcement.[break][break] Shellheart had taken her out, on a hunting patrol during the announcement,as she was probably concerned about what Ivorysplash would feel. Ivorysplash didn’t need any coddling anymore, although her mother refused to see that. She hadn’t needed it since was a paw, and her feelings were much less delicate. She had caught a mouse in the company of the slight forest that was on their territory. It had certainly been a lot cooler under the shade of the trees.[break][break] She was too lost in her thoughts, that she hadn’t noticed a stray tree root sticking out, and she had stumbled over it in a clumsy manner. She let out an undignified hiss, cursing the tree root in her head. At least no one had been around to see her.
Sharksong walked through Coconut Trail for a while, long enough that he began to think that Ivorysplash wasn’t actually there. Just as he was about to give up looking, he heard the snap of undergrowth, and a sound audible and familiar enough that he knew it was from a cat. Could it be…?[break][break]
He went in the direction where the sound originated from, and as he crested a hill, he saw his sister below. Part of him was surprised that he managed to find her at all, while part of him was relieved that he wouldn’t have to look any longer. It took him a moment to realize that she looked flustered, frustrated, and he hesitated on approaching her. Doubt gnawed at him eagerly, and he was quickly tempted to turn around before she saw him. However, he knew it wouldn’t solve his problems, so he had no choice but to face her now. He didn’t know when he would get the chance again.[break][break]
He descended the slope slowly, gut churning. “Ivorysplash.” He called her name firmly, making sure that his voice didn’t pitch as a question. It was a statement, one he hoped was confident and collected. If he started out on the right foot, it would only be easier from there.

Ivorysplash turned in surprise as she heard a familiar voice cry out. She sighed, as any prey she would’ve found would definitely be gone by now , with the combination of her stumbling and her brother’s voice. She wasn’t all sure what he wanted. She thought maybe the deputy had been leading a patrol, but when she looked past him for a patrol, she didn’t see one.[break][break] She didn’t see a reason to be outright rude to him, as Ivorysplash was sure Sharksong wouldn’t have gone out here if he didn’t want to,and after all,it wasn’t like him to come looking for her. She was struck with a brief moment of worry, as if something had happened to Shellheart, but surely he’d have more urgency if anything did happen to either of their parents, no matter how distant they were now, kin was still kin. She waved her tail to acknowledge him, and after an awkward beat, said “Congrats on being deputy.” She had known that he would’ve done well on the trails, after all he was a very strong cat. The grey she cat shuffled her paws, her mouse laid forgotten on the floor, as she had dropped in when she stumbled. She realized then, how measly of a catch it was, and flattened her ears in embarrassment.
