Monarch that migrates north
Tribe of Twisted Roots ∙ Quartermaster ∙ male ∙ 26 moons
Appearance
Description sentence:
A orange-gold Bengal tom cat with light green eyes.
Appearance:
Monarch is easily recognizable; his golden Bengal pelt renders him quite distinct when among other cats. Tribe cats generally have darker pelts, and while Monarch might be an exception, his darker spots and stripes still provide stellar camouflage in the island territory. He was aptly named by his mother for her personal favorite time of the year - the few days during Soothing Skies when Monarch butterflies would migrate northward over the island. Monarch's eyes are a light green color, although it is difficult to tell and they often look yellow in the daytime. He has a variety of scars across his body, the most distinctive of which is a long scar along the right flank. Monarch acquired many of these marks in fights among his own Tribe mates in his need to maintain power. At first impression, Monarch can be quite the fright. Battle-scarred, stocky, and muscular, Monarch maintains a stern, judgmental expression that comes across as anything but friendly.
Personality
Positive Traits: • Confident • Inquisitive • Resourceful | Negative Traits: • Secretive • Anxious • Harsh |
Personality:
Monarch is aware of his strengths and weaknesses, and makes a great effort to put his best foot forward. He knows his limits, and when to push them. He has an incredible belief in himself as well as his Tribe to work together. Confidence is a must for leadership, or to the very least, the aura of confidence is. With his knowledge and experience, Monarch is able to serve as a symbol of hope and comfort during times of hardship.
While confident on the outside, Monarch can be rather secretive regarding his own personal feelings and details. He dislikes talking about his family life or his relatives, and in general it is difficult to discern his true feelings. Because of this, some cats may question his trustworthiness as a deputy. He certainly does not lack knowledge, but sometimes comes across as suspicious. However, he has proven formidable in combat and challenge and thus snuffed out any doubts.
In addition, Monarch has proven to be resourceful; anomaly and newness do not intimidate him. From the day he was born, he strove to understand the intricacies of his surrounding ecosystem and the personalities of his surrounding Tribe cats. He understands the delicate balance of Tribe prey and predator relations unlike any other. His attitude toward the Clan cats nearby is not hostility, but intrigue and wariness toward their unfamiliar customs. Monarch values not only being to act, but also being able to understand and store away the understanding for the future.
However, he differs from Tempest in that he is not nearly as pious and will often question the Tribe's morals as much as he questions the rest of the world. This can sometimes become a sour point between Tempest and Monarch. Yet Monarch respects Tempest's other qualities greatly and thus is content serving as Quartermaster. He has no intention on stealing more power. Aside from his father, Tempest might be the other cat he genuinely looks up to and is not condescending towards.
Despite his knowledge, experience, and confidence, Monarch is prone to anxiety and worries about things needlessly. Part of this results from his responsibilities, but the other part is simply that he feels stressed easily. As a quartermaster, this is one of the reasons why he is often challenged for power, as others will take advantage of his anxiety and insecurities.

Character Background
Family:
Moth Flutters by Moonlight (mother, deceased)
Dragonfly Hovers Over Pond (sister, nifty)
Ocean that Meets Horizon (father, adoptable)
History:
The Tribe thought it was a miracle that Ocean and Moth would ever become mates, never mind have kids together. They were constantly fighting, arguing, causing ruckus in the Tribe from when they were apprentices, and often the two young cats had to be physically subdued from tussling with each other. However, somewhere between the insults and fighting, some sort of affection must have developed. The two were a prime example of young love, and were not ready to have kits when Moth became pregnant. Monarch along with his sister Dragonfly were off to a rough start from the beginning. Their parents would argue constantly, bickering over the smallest things. Moth would die from greencough the following winter, and the Tribe expected the kits to be either abandoned or die from greencough as well.
But perhaps Monarch's greatest blessing in life was having Ocean as a father. Ocean would, unexpectedly, grieve heavily over the loss of his snappy and argumentative mate. In a brief conversation, Ocean admitted that he missed Moth greatly, and even missed their fiery disagreements. However, Ocean scarcely showed his grief and really stepped up as a father after Moth's death. He was rumored to have spent more time with the Tenderfoots and Caretakers during those moons than attending to his duties as a Navigator. Monarch and Dragonfly would grow up to be an eager and inquisitive Swabbies, excelling at many skills and constantly pushed to their limits by their overly involved father. Ocean would continue to father them, teaching them skills outside of training and also instilling morals. Ocean was a tough father, and seldom gave them kind words. This was because Ocean was determined to train his kits into the resilient and hardy cats that would fit into the Tribe.
Upon becoming a Navigator, Monarch would soon put into practice the morals that Ocean had instilled in him. He would never back down to any challenge, despite his hidden anxiety, and would confidently put down those who defied him. He would grow closer to Tempest as he was a reliable and consistent Navigator. At the same time, he would grow apart from his sister Dragonfly, who saw his toughness and sternness disturbing. Dragonfly would plead him many times to not be so proactive, as others might see it as a sign of power and challenge him. Although Monarch knew his sister cared for his well-being, he would grow annoyed of her doting.
Not surprisingly, Tempest's decision to make him Quartermaster would spark debate among the rest of the Tribe. Monarch, while imposing and impressive, was also known for being very closed off and somewhat weird. He was also not as pious or religious as Tempest and some cats feared punishment from the Gods. Some accused Tempest of favoritism. Monarch took the challenges, knowing that Tempest and all Quartermasters and Commanders before him had faced similar situations. The young tom was actually gracious toward Tempest for letting him handle his own challenges. It was only this way, as taught by his father, that Monarch could impose his place in the Tribe.
Since Monarch became Quartermaster, he has invested much of his time into ensuring the fitness and education of young cats. Possibly influenced by Ocean's close supervision of his development, Monarch believes that change in the Tribe begins in the younger generations. He often checks in on Swabbie training and will make time socialize with younger Navigators. Monarch himself hardly makes important decisions, and he will generally agree with Tempest when that is necessary. One of his top anxieties is losing Tempest, and having to make such important decisions himself, which he believes he is not ready for. Thus, as Quartermaster he fiercely defends and enforces his Commanders views, and has enforced an unprecedented unity in the Tribe.
