[attr="class","tsbody"] Toucanstar had set out for the day to inspect her territory and make her round near the single border she had. Although it was usually frowned upon for her to do such a task alone, she wasn't quite in the mood this afternoon to deal with a patrol of cats following behind her every pawstep. While she appreciated the way that cats fell into line as she walked through the camp, she was beginning to miss how she could blend into the background even as a deputy. Now, she was the center of attention at all times - the only true break she was able to get was when she was outside of the camp walls and on her own. [break][break]
The day was sweltering hot. She could feel the heat searing into her black pelt, the moisture leaving her mouth as she drew in the scents of the jungle, and the warmth of the ground heating beneath her paws with each step she took. They could use some more rain, and definitely a breeze, but today was completely calm, the water of the bay laying almost completely flat with no wind to push it into crests. Such a hot day drew the leader to the falls that marked almost the center of her territory, looking to quench her thirst. [break][break]
What she wasn't expecting to find was one of her warriors throwing himself off the falls. Again. And again. The black she-cat stalked beneath the trees near the falls, her ears drawn back against her skull. How did he find the time to goof around like this? How did he justify playing like a kit in the waterfall when there were hungry kits and elders in the camp? A low growl rumbled through her chest as she watched him once again ascend to his ledge, and launch himself clear off of it again.[break][break]
As he dove into the water with a crash, the tall leader had finally had enough. She stood up, head held high and ears perked forward while her tail lashed from side to side. Her orange eyes displayed not anger, but calm annoyance - a bit of a playful tinge. If he had enough energy to continuously toss himself off of a waterfall, she would show him a better way to spend his energy. "Nightscreech!" she called out, a short, snarking laugh pushing its way past her canines. "Since you have enough energy to spend it jumping from the falls, how about you spend some in a more productive way?" a smirk rose to her features as she stalked closer to the shore. "Come on, let's spar - I could use a distraction."

[attr="class","tsbody"] Just as soon as Toucanstar had set her paw on the ground after finishing grooming her face and ears, the distinctive white pelt of one of her clanmates came stomping into camp. She couldn't help the slight smile that rose to her lips at the sight of his impressive catch. Toucanstar knew the capabilities of her clanmates - and as such, she knew that catching anything was impressive for Snowwhisker, let alone something so large. It would easily feed two warriors, filling them up so that they could better protect their clan. She let out a soft murr of appreciation as he settled in next to her, tipping her nose down ever so slightly in acknowledgment of his respective greeting. [break][break]
"Nice day, isn't it? How has it been treating you?" the young tom asked, settling in next to her. Toucanstar's amber eyes lit up with appreciation at the conversation as she turned to face him. Slowly, she lowered her body to the ground, arranging her paws to splay out in front of her in the process. Her limbs really were a bit too long for her small frame, making her look larger than she actually was. A long black tail neatly drapped over her back legs, the tip of it twitching to and fro.[break][break]
"It's a lovely day, especially for the season. It's been treating me well - my hunt was successful this morning, managed to snag the bat," she purred, nodding her head over toward the freshkill pile where the black shape still rested near the top, accented by the kill that Snowwhisker had added to it. "How has the day been treating you, Snowwhisker?" her voice was soothing, with an undertone of curiosity. It was a rarity to hear the leader not yelling, and actually talking for once. "The hare you brought back to camp this morning is sizeable! Nice catch!" she purred, complimenting him on the impressive kill. Hopefully, with the right pursuassion he would continue to bring back prey of that size.

[attr="class","tsbody"] The morning light was just beginning to break through the dense trees that surrounded the encampment that Toucanstar called home when she strolled leisurely back into it, a decently sized bat clutched between her ivories. She had woken long before the dawn to set out hunting, her compulsion to never let a minute be wasted forcing her out of the comfort of her nest and out into the jungle to find food for her Clan. Although she found that she excelled in hunting due to her quiet gait, she was rather unlucky this morning. After a long hour of failed attempts at fishing within the streams that neared the camp, she had instead taken to the trees to test her luck there. She wondered at whether it was her need to fill the time that got her up so early, or that she was still not used to sleeping alone in the leader's den - but she let that worry slip away as the fish did from her claws. Within minutes, she had selected her prey and brought it down with ease - bat wasn't exactly her favorite meal, but she was sure that someone within camp would appreciate the sentiment. [break][break]
Carefully, the lanky black she-cat placed the bat atop the rather small pile of fresh-kill. She made a mental note that she would have to ensure that it was stacked back to its proper glory today. She couldn't have the nursing queens and frail elders waking up to such a pitiful pile, especially not when the jungle was full of life ripe for the picking. Charcoal claws gently raked the ground as she walked over to the entrance of her den, nearing the towering Rockpile. Her motions were liquid smooth and calculated, each motion holding weight and purpose behind it. Toucanstar turned and sat down, letting her fiery eyes trace over every inch of the camp.[break][break]
A lot of cats thought that she was sneering most of the time. A lot of cats were right. Yet - it wasn't malicious as most kits immediately thought. It was the look of calculation that saw her turning over in her head which portions of the camp needed to be reinforced, which could do with being changed, and who exactly needed to be doing each of these tasks. It was the look of a leader who took pride in her Clan, and who analyzed each decision before making it. It was the look of worry and concern over the safety and health of her clanmates. This look remained on her features as she scanned the camp, yet as her gaze finally had reached the end of its theoretical lap, she couldn't help but contently sigh. [break][break]
Everything was perfect. The Clan was prospering, the walls were fortified, her clanmates were well - sure, the fresh-kill pile was a bit low, but that could easily be fixed. For today, she could relax and enjoy the morning. Her shoulders lowered and she drew her paw up to her face, licking it gently and drawing it over her cheek and then her ear. It was taking some time for the new leader to get adjusted to her role and for her to quit worrying over each and every detail, but for perhaps the first time since gaining her lives, she felt at ease. For once - she actually looked approachable and like she could have a conversation without worrying the ground with her claws. It took time, but she was returning to the grace she held as a deputy. A small smile graced her features as she happily waited for more paws to begin to stir within her camp.[break][break]
