he chief's thoughts swirled - a mixture of wonder gnawing at her stomach, one she has never fully been able to quell. The thought that there was life beyond the slice of territory she and her clan had carved out for themselves haunted her regularly. She wanted to know more, see everything that there was to be seen... but duty always had a way of keeping her close to home. She could not be so reckless when she was responsible for so many. While she knew TidalClan would be fine without her, she wanted to be there to see the clan continue to flourish. The thoughts of adventure were merely a dream. One that would not come true, for better or for worse. There were more realistic things that the she-cat ought to set her mind to, anyway.
[break][break]Tinystar had been so absorbed in her own mind that she did not realize that Bayfur had tracked her location to the lake from the main patrol. Her tail had been swishing gently behind her, a subconscious movement that occurred when she was deep in her thoughts. When she felt teeth wrap around her tail, she leapt up with a yelp - more from surprise than pain. The calico-and-white cat whirled around, her fur standing straight up and making her look twice her usual small size. It wasn't until she recognized the familiar face of Bayfur looking back at her that she was able to collect herself again.
[break][break]She had trained the tom as a fledgling, and the two were rather close. She still remembered the small scrap of shaking fur he had been when he was being trained by Cactusbloom. It wasn't until the fledgling was under Tinystar's training and the influence of poppy seeds did he begin relaxing a bit. His transformation from the fragile leaf in the wind to the bold young fighter that stood before her today was something she admired. She felt a glow of pride burn in her chest as she looked at him, the earlier fright he had given her all but forgiven.
[break][break]The tom spoke, then, his words bringing her out of reminiscing and back to the thoughts of the mountains that she had been frightened out of. Shaking her head, she chuckled. "No, I don't reckon they will be exploding anytime soon." The she-cat tried to shake the yearning feeling of wonder away, but she knew she didn't have to fully mask her thoughts from her previous fledgling. "I was just wondering what lays beyond. Away from JungleClan, away from our territory. Beyond." The she-cat responded, focusing her eyes back to Bayfur.
[break][break]"The expeditions of many moons again were dangerous, but I always wondered what it would have been like to be involved in them. I wonder if our ancestors ever went up the mountain slopes, or ventured beyond the island." Coconutstar had inspired fear in adventuring. Tinystar wanted to encourage curiosity. She also wanted to exercise caution. Surely if it was the will of the Gods, they would send her a sign?

bit of time had passed since she had taken on a fledgling herself. There had been many fledglings she had seen all the way through to fighter, for certain. She would not have been able to obtain the title of chief without the experience that teaching young and impressionable minds offered. Tinystar had taught them all - the quiet ones, the difficult ones, the know-it-alls and the lazy ones. Somehow, though, teaching Pearlpaw was still a unique challenge all of its own.
[break][break]The calico she-cat had waken up before the light of dawn even poured through the cracked window panes of the twoleg ruins she made her nest in. This wasn't unusual for her, it was as if a timer went off internally every morning. Duty forced her to lift herself to her paws, even on the days where she would rather curl up into a tighter ball and squeeze her eyes shut again. Today was no exception. The small she-cat got to her paws, and made her way into the camp.
[break][break]The sun was just beginning to offer a slight glow to the horizon now, but even still she was not the only soul awake. She saw figures moving across the camp as the dawn patrol assembled. She had appointed Newtstripe, Bayfur and Rosefang and a couple of fledglings to go check out the borders, and if all were quiet - they were to also lead a hunting patrol. Her paws ached to join her old friend, but today it was time to shoulder a different kind of duty.
[break][break]She quietly entered the fledgling's den, navigating the nests careful so not to disturb the wrong sleeping figure. Her eyes made out the figure of Pearlpaw as her eyes adjusted, and she gently stuck one paw out to give the young cat's shoulder a shove. "Pearlpaw?" She whispered softly. "Pearlpaw, it's time to do some training." The chief didn't wait for a response, instead she turned and exited the den to wait.

he calico she-cat didn't know what kind of feelings her actions were bringing up in Coralfrost. She wanted to comfort the fighter, hoping she would grow more comfortable with the tabby striped tom before the pair of them. Newtstripe was her childhood friend, someone she had relied on - even when the two had drifted in separate directions. Despite that, she still relied on him as a trusted fighter to support her cause, regardless of the past. He would always set everything aside to help her, and she him.
[break][break]Newtstripe was charismatic, he knew how to engage even the quietest of cats in the clan. Even though Coralfrost was still hesitant, she gestured to another small patch of blooming flowers. Speaking quickly, she asked if Newtstripe had a favourite flower. Tinystar found her eyes sliding back to the tom, her head tilting curiously. This was not something she had ever thought to ask of him, and it would be new knowledge of her friend from younger days.
[break][break]Jasmine. Tinystar found herself nodding with approval almost subconsciously. The sweet yet gentle fragrance of the flower was just strong enough. It was certainly high on her list of favourites. The calico she-cat had been thinking what her own favourite flower was when Newtstriped posed the question to her. The chief thought for a moment, pursing her lips.
[break][break]"If I had to choose, it would probably be an orchid. There is so many varieties, and they can be found in so many places. Their beauty is simple and elegant." The she-cat smiled, imagining the fragrant aroma that went along with the orchid. For a moment, the smell took her to a different time and place, away from the two others and their midnight rendezvous.

diesel @sovereign | 290 words | she's here, she's late, but she's arrived x)
A sound that might have been described as a soft chuckle escaped Anispine's maw briefly, but the moment passed so quickly he wasn't even entirely sure if it actually happened or not. The tom felt the medicine cat's eyes on him as he dug at the ginger. After extracting some of the herb, the black tom merely regarded him with a look he could only name as exasperation. He couldn't help but pick up a bit of sarcasm in the comment that he had done a great job.
[break][break]Barracudabite rolled his eyes, dropping the mouthful of ginger he had dug out for the other tom. Despite the slight annoyance he felt bubbling up that the other tom had asked him to do a job even though he was capable of doing it himself, and then wasn't happy with the quality of his work - he was still interested in what Anispine had to teach. While herbs were not on his list of responsibilities as a warrior, he liked to obtain any shred of knowledge that was offered to him. The black tom explained how ginger grew, and the best way to extract the spicy herb.
[break][break]The silver tom watched as the other began digging around the roots that he had already exposed, working for a few minutes until more of the pale roots came to the surface. The medicine cat practically stuck his entire head in the hole, biting the root much closer to the shoot than he had. The next words out of Anispine's mouth made Barracudabite snort. "I see what you've done there. Great job." He mrrowed, rolling his eyes as the last words were delivered with just enough sarcasm to get his point across.
[break][break]The tom examined the root of ginger thoughtfully. Looking at Anispine, the tom tilted his head. "So now that we have the ginger - what do you use it for, anyway?" He asked, genuinely interested. He pawed at the smaller sprouts that he had pulled out. Hopefully his collection paired with the medicine cat's would be enough for the tom's herb stores. "Was that enough Ginger? Do you need to collect any other herbs today?" He asked, not waiting for the answer to his first question.
Barracudabite had been assigned to the dawn patrol, but when he woke up the sun hadn't even begun to filter through the canopy of trees above. His blue eyes blinked in the dimness of the warrior's den as he tried to figure out what time it was. Judging by the heavy sounds of deep sleep surrounding him, it was still far too early to even consider getting up. So, he did what anyone would have done - he curled himself up again tightly, and drifted into a light slumber to pass the remaining few hours.
[break][break]His sleep was interrupted again when he was jolted awake by the dawn light creeping into the den. He was about to get to his feet when another warrior brushed in, her hulking frame radiating annoyance. Brindlebear. He didn't know the she very well, but he did know she was a force to be reckoned with. Her words to him were immediately hostile, and it didn't sound as if she wanted to hear any excuses he may or may not have. Under her standards, he was late. Under clan standards, he was right on time.
[break][break]The silvery tom narrowed his blue eyes at her, glaring at her down his angular muzzle. "I'm rather capable of figuring out whether I have time for breakfast or if I need a grooming all by myself, thanks," He retorted, his voice cold. He wasn't in the greatest of moods most mornings, but being spoken down to so early before the day even started added an extra damper to his attitude.
[break][break]She turned to leave, and for a moment Barracudabite just stared where she exited. It was going to be a horribly long patrol if he had to put up with her the whole time. Rolling his eyes, he got to his paws - giving his chest a few self conscious licks before exiting the den. As he walked through camp he saw Brindlebear had settled down by a tree. The tom made his way towards her, staring at her quietly as if daring her to make another nasty comment in his direction. "Sitting around now, are we? Now you're the one who is late." He snorted.
Rosa - A strained friendship would be a lot of fun! Maybe Ember secretly thinks Tempest should have picked him as his friend, and it kind of meddled with the way their friendship went? It would also contribute to why Ember is so bent out of shape towards Monarch ^^
@seaoi - Oh my gosh, that would be the cutest! I would love to have a thread with them. I could see Tinystar definitely going either way. I could start a thread with her initiating it if you'd like!
Barracudabite tried to ignore the eye rolling of Cicadapaw. He refused to feed into the younger tom's insecurities. He wanted to help shape the young tom into a strong and loyal warrior, but that wouldn't happen without firm leadership. As the apprentice spoke, he saw the emotion in his eyes. As moisture begun welling up there, Barracudabite kept his face still. He could see the brown tom trying to force his emotions away, but he wasn't quite as stoic as his mentor - and he never would be.
[break][break]Changing Cicadapaw was not possible - nor did he really have any intentions to - but he saw qualities that he could work with in the young tom. "With hard work and dedication, you will get it eventually too. There's nothing stopping you but yourself from being a strong fighter. I'll believe in you when you start believing in yourself." He locked eyes with the other tom, blue eyes meeting blue eyes in knowing stare. He would need to find his confidence if he was ever going to to improve his skills.
[break][break]As he performed the move again, he felt the apprentice watching him with a newfound focus. The sun had begun drifting below the horizon as the younger tom mimicked his demonstration time and time again. After many failed attempts as well as some half decent recreations of the duck and twist, Cicadapaw finally performed it well. Barracudabite watched as the tom pushed through his exhaustion to perform the move just right. Despite the tired eyes and surely tired body, the apprentice lit up with the feeling of success.
[break][break]The smaller tom was grinning from ear to ear, tired yet happy tears welling in his eyes. Barracudabite couldn't help but let out the gruffest mrow of amusement, nodding his head with approval. "You did well, Cicadapaw. Tell me, how did that success feel?" The tom remembered the first time he had gotten the intoxicating taste of success. From those very early days, that same fire still fuelled him forward. He was constantly trying to better himself. He had nothing to prove to anyone, but everything to prove to himself.
[break][break]"Keep pushing yourself to do better, and you will continue to be successful. I expect this move to be perfected by our next training session. Train whenever you can." The silver tom sat back on his haunches, licking his chest hairs as the drowning sun cast a warm glow over them. "Before you can go get something to eat at camp, I will show you one last move. Once I do it, I want you to give it a try." The tom padded around Cicadapaw, and then lunged forward with a frontal attack.
[break][break]He brought his front paw forward fast and hard, claws sheathed, purposefully just missing the apprentice's head. Had the blow landed, it would have been a strong one. "This move is called the Paw Strike. It is the simplest battle move you can learn. You can either use it to hit your opponent hard on the head with your paw, or you can unsheathe your claws to slice forward. Let me see you try it." The silver tom finished his demonstration and sat on his haunches, watching the tired young tom. Hopefully he wasn't pushing him too hard. After all, it was their first session.
Often times when he couldn't sleep he found his paws taking him away from camp into the dark void of jungle that surrounded the clan's territories. Maybe apprentices, elders or their neighbours in TidalClan might be nervous about being in the jungle at night; but not him. To Barracudabite, the jungle was home. He actually felt safe embraced in all of the thick trees. Surely the jungle could be a source of danger in many ways, but if you kept your wits about you - no harm would come.
[break][break]The tom padded out of the camp in the cool evening air, taking deep breaths of crisp air as he moved silently through the entrance. He had been able to get a bit of restless sleep, but eventually he stirred again and was too alert to fall back into a slumber. Instead of wasting his time trying to coax his mind to turn off, he decided that another evening exploration might be more ideal. If it weren't for all of the prey being asleep, he would surely be hunting to provide for the clan; but instead, he wandered.
[break][break]Barracudabite found himself admiring the way that the silvery moonlight bathed the territories in a surreal glow. Despite dark patches where the trees grew so densely together that they did not let in much moonlight, the rest of the jungle was lit well enough by the fragments of light shining down from above. The jungle was alive with sounds despite the lateness of his wanderings - bugs and bird crooning to one another, a natural symphony that brought comfort to him. The background noise was reassuring.
[break][break]Soon enough he came across an opening in the canopy above where the moonlight poured down and lit up the entire spot. Barracudabite stopped, thinking that the clearing might be a good enough spot to rest for a bit in peace. He lay down and rolled onto his back, eyes taking in the burning stars above. Was StarClan watching over him tonight?
tinystar && rosefang if he has a reputation for being difficult it could be fun if he was the challenging one that tiny is constantly like again? with haha. i think she would really admire his loyalty but be exasperated by him at the same time!
