Year 55, Scorching Sands 09.05.2019 → The temperatures of the islands are a steady 98° F on land/ high 80s in water. There is almost no breeze, the sun is uncomfortably warm.
Prey during the day is pretty scarce due to the heat, however is quite active after the sun goes down.
Lost in the dense jungles of scattered islands, facing perils unimagined by their ancestors, are three warrior groups - The traditional JungleClan, descendants of the original clans carried aboard a twoleg contraption from their home long ago and breaking new ground on old beliefs. Second, the curious TidalClan, made up of kittypets who chose to abandon their long since passed twoleg civilization ways for those of true felines. Lastly, the mysterious Tribe of Twisted Roots, hidden in the mist from others with their strange ways and a deeper knowledge of the land around them. Together they must learn how to take their fate into their own paws if they wish to survive this land of erupting mountains and roaring waters.

Rain that Blurs the Sky, despite her name, preferred the sunshine.
She loved lazing in a warm patch of sun after her duties were done, fully at ease and feeling self-satisfied with herself. No one could say she didn't pull her weight in the Tribe of Twisted Roots. Rain was always cheerfully the first one to offer herself up for patrols and hunting, because she knew that if she did her duties early, she could goof off sooner. And goofing off was such an underrated activity in the Tribe! Some members were so serious, or so fretful, like poor Stingray. He'd been in knots lately, since Scuttle disappeared. He could use some sunshine too.
Sadly, sunshine was best shared with someone. Breeze was her favorite cat to ever walk the earth, the two sisters closer than most siblings ever turned out. It came from not having their mother around, cats said. Rain didn't know about that, but it didn't matter. There was nothing wrong wanting to spend time with her sister.
This early evening, though, she was off somewhere and Rain couldn't find her. So she wandered down to the no-salt lake on her own, because Soothing Skies wouldn't last forever. She wanted to take advantage of the last warm rays of the dying sun.
The tabby cat lay in the sand by the calm lake waters, tail flopping around lazily. The wind blew on occasion, rustling the cattail reeds beside her.
Cattails were funny things. They looked exactly like their name - furry brown tails, which some queens told their kits were the tails of bad little ones who didn't listen to the Gods. Rain wasn't so sure now she wasn't a kit, but it was a good story to keep them in line.
The wind blew a bit harder, and one bobbed down low enough to bap her on the head. With a soft mrrrow, she rolled onto her back and flailed at it. Her white paws snatched the soft plume, and pulled it down to her stomach. Like an undignified kit, she kicked at it, rolling around in play.

The day felt as if it was never going to end. He had gone out at dawn to join a patrol around the island perimeter. There was growing concerns about the cats who lived on the island across from them, but Ember of Dying Light had only heard the whispers. Unlike some others, he wasn't as privy to that knowledge as he might like to be. His mind drifted almost immediately to Monarch that Migrates North, the young tom who had been chosen as the tribe's Quartermaster recently - a decision that Ember was happy to yowl about in annoyance to anyone who would listen. He simply wasn't experienced enough. Even his sister, Dragonfly, would have been a better choice.
[break][break]The day was so beautiful, though, and so he decided that such dour thoughts needed to be pushed away. He wouldn't let thoughts of Monarch ruin what remained of the beautiful Soothing Skies afternoon. Even though he was exhausted from the dawn patrol, he couldn't help but want to keep busy. His stomach rumbled, as if on queue. With a quick scan around the camp to see if anyone would notice his absence, he padded out of the camp with his tail swaying in the gentle breeze - ears pricked, and his mind set on going to no-salt lake to do some hunting.
[break][break]The sun was shining down on his pelt and making it glow a beautiful deep copper colour. The rays were warm on his back, and he relished being outside in such fine weather. It wasn't long before he found himself instinctively following the old trail that had been worn down by many, many moons of paws treading down to the lake. Before he reached the water, though, his nostrils flared as he caught the faint whiff of a mouse. He sunk to the ground, crouching into a hunting position as he scanned the foliage for the creature.
[break][break]There it was! He saw the small gray creature snapping open a seed with its two large front teeth. He narrowed his eyes in focus and began stalking forward, his hind end swaying from side to side as he lined up the kill. With his claws outstretched, he sprung forward and landed on top of the mouse; killing it with a swift bite to the neck. He dropped the prey at his paws, and took a moment to quickly clean himself up. He picked up the mouse gingerly in his jaws and found his way back to the path, ready to go grab a quick drink from the fresh water.
[break][break]As he made his way closer to the water, he caught a familiar scent on the wind. It was definitely another navigator. The scent grew stronger as he walked, and as he made his way through the foliage he could just see the familiar tabby-and-white pelt of Rain that Blurs the Sky. At first he couldn't see what she was doing, but as he approached quietly - unobserved - he could see that she was rolled onto her back, batting at a cattail that was drooping over where she had presumably been sitting.
[break][break]Ember dropped the mouse off to the side of the path, brushing a bit of dirt over it to fetch it later. He padded towards Rain with his tail lifted in a silent greeting, a mrrow of amusement escaping his maw before he could form any actual words of greeting. "Good afternoon, Rain," He mewed as he padded closer, waving his raised tail. "Brushing up on your hunting skills, I see?" He added, jokingly, eyes glimmering with mischief.
Rain wasn't often able to focus on more than one thing at a time. While a better navigator might have noticed the presence of another cat nearby, she was locked on her little game of rolling around. The cattail was tickling her nose, making her whiskers twitch in amusement. Skillful paws dug into the stem, tugging it firmly to try and wrench it from the ground. It merely shredded, and bobbed back up, bits of green plant now caught in her claws.
With a soft mahhing noise, she chirped at it and launched herself into the cluster of plants. There was tussling, and thrashing, and rustling, but finally she managed to snip one off with her teeth. That was when a familiar voice spoke up from a few mouse-lengths away.
She shot upright amidst the plants, amber eyes widened, and a cattail dangling limply from her mouth. "Hunting skills?" she echoed in confusion, mouth full, looking around for whatever prey she was missing.
It clicked as the feathery plant tickled her muzzle. "Ohh! Not really, just playing." There was nothing wrong with lazing off, when she'd already done her work. Now she was paying attention, she smelled blood on Ember's mouth - he too, had done his daily duties she assumed. So he could laze off too!
Breeze thought Ember was a bit of a loudmouth. They didn't usually converse, hence why Rain didn't usually converse with him either. But he seemed to be nice enough, and wasn't loudly arguing about anything. But in case he did want to get talky, she pounced over and brushed the feathery end of the cattail to his nose. Rain purred a laugh, eyes smiling and daring him to have a bit of fun.

He wasn't used to seeing his tribemates taking it easy. Many of them were rather somber, and so many were duty focused to the point where they sometimes forgot to live in the moment. Rain That Blurs The Sky was different, though. He watched her as she played a bit longer before she heard him. Ember held back a chuckle as the navigator shot straight up, and gaze at him with wide amber eyes - the cattail that she had been playing with drooping out of her maw. She mumbled a response to him, her words muffled around the plant. It took a moment for the joke to register, he noticed, but she didn't seem ashamed that she was just playing. She shouldn't be ashamed at all.
[break][break]In fact, it was refreshing. He was about to pad closer to her and ask her how her day was going but he didn't have the chance. The other cat pounced towards him, brushing the feathery end of the plant to his nose. He blinked for a moment, not sure how to react. She pulled back with a laugh, purring - a flash of something else in her eyes. She seemed to be daring him to react. Daring him to play with her. He let out an amused mrrow and dropped down into a crouch, his haunches wiggling. He had finished everything he needed to do today, where was the harm in a little bit of play?
[break][break]"I bet you can't dodge me!" He called, just before he launched forward with his claws sheathed, hoping that he didn't hurl himself at her hard enough to hurt her. He intended to knock her over in a playful pounce. He wasn't sure if he had been able to pin her down or not, he hadn't spent too much time lining up the jump before throwing himself at her.
She only mildly worried he'd scold her for being such a kit. Ember was a big tough type of tom, but he'd never really told her off for not being more mature and focused like some other cats would. Gosh, she could imagine the scowl on Tempest's face if he saw her goofing off right now. He wanted his navigators to be battle ready, fierce cats... and she doubted playing with fuzzy plants counted as fighting practice.
Ember was up for some fun, it seemed. She was delight, eyes sparkling as he mrrowed with good humor and crouched. She saw the pounce coming, but her white paws were clumsy as always and her dodge was marred by them tripping her up. He wasn't being violent about the offense, though. His claws were clearly sheathed, but she squeaked in playful fear anyway because he was, quite frankly, huge.
He landed on her back, knocking the wind out of her.. But it was oddly exhilarating. She mewed a laugh, squirming frantically to get out from under him. "It's like dodging a boulder falling off a cliff!" she teased in good humor, her tail flopping around in happiness.
She then realized she'd lost her grip on the cattail. She twisted her head around to look for it, but she couldn't find the plant tendril anywhere. "Oh.. where'd the.. oh.."
Oh dear.
"Ember, I do think we've crushed my toy under us." Then she burst into giggles, thinking of how flat the poor plant was going to be under their combined weight.

The clan was fed, patrols were done... there was no harm in having some fun. The she-cat tripped over her own snowy white paws, becoming an easy target for Ember. The fluffy russet tom managed to pin her underneath him quite easily. He chuckled, persistently continuing to hold her down with little effort though she wiggled about under him. It wasn't hard to keep her pinned down, he was quite larger than her. "Gotcha!" He meowed, eyes glinting mischeviously.
[break][break]He couldn't help but smirk at her comment. He knew her comment was just a teasing one. He grumbled some sort of remark in response under his breath. He watched as under his paws, the smaller she-cat was looking around frantically. He worried that perhaps he had caused her to lose something of importance to her, but it wasn't until she spoke again did he find out what she was looking for.
[break][break]His eyes were wide as he watched her look, and he leapt off of her - alarmed for a moment. It wasn't until she looked at him and made the next remark that he breathed a bit easier. He shook his head, laughing. "You silly furball. You had me worried there for a moment!" He mrrowed, rolling his eyes at her. He could imagine just how squished the plant would be under her. "I guess we'll just have to find another one."
[break][break]He turned away from Rain for a moment, looking for another plant. It wasn't long before his eyes fell on more of the long grassy plant, the fluffy end of the cattail catching his eyes. He dropped into a prowl, and with a firm push of powerful hind legs he was in the air. He pulled the plant down with unsheathed claws with ease. He picked it up between his teeth and padded back to where the other navigator sat, and dangled the fluffy plant over her - trying to bait her into batting at it so he could pull away and fake her out.
She could breathe again as he leaped off her, the she-cat taking some dramatic moments to pant as he called her a furball. "Me! I should think you're the big giant furball, squashing everything everywhere you go!" Her voice was completely teasing, of course. Rain never liked making fun of anyone seriously, for she'd often had such meanness as a kit and swabbie. It wasn't fun being called mousebrained, or being called a big furball for real. She liked Ember, anyway. He was a funny tom, and too sweet to make fun of.
Rain rolled onto her side, looking at the ground, then her white stomach fur. It was covered in plant fragments, which she began to lick off with long tongue strokes. She was aware of Ember going to fetch another toy, but only fully engaged when it dangled above her languishly positioned body. "Ooooh." She swatted without thinking, only for him to playfully yank it out of her reach.
A soft gasp escaped her. "How dare!" She scrambled to her paws, and launched herself forward, attempting to clamber onto his back this time. It was much more of an effort though, so she wasn't sure if she'd succeed.

The russet tom couldn't help but chuckle as she seemed relieved when he leapt off of her. Her response to calling her a furball made him chuckle. How could he argue that? He knew that the she-cat was teasing, though. Her eyes were dancing, alight with humour. For a moment he appreciated the way that the early afternoon sunlight danced on her tabby pelt, making patches glow an almost golden hue. Realizing he hadn't answered her, he plastered a smirk on his face. "Well you were slow enough to get squashed in the first place!" He retorted lightly.
[break][break]He watched out of the corner of his eye as she rolled over and began cleaning her stomach fur. The white tufts were a stark contrast to the ground under her. When he reappeared, dangling the cattail over her head, it was as if something possessed her to bat at it. The missed swat made him chuckle with the stem grasped between his teeth. She gasped softly, acting awfully betrayed to have him yank the fun toy away from her in a game of catch-it-if-you-can.
[break][break]Rain was up on her paws in a flash, and before he could react she had launched herself forward. He felt the soft blow of her landing on top of his back, a little awkwardly. She managed to stick the landing, though. She had clambered her way on top of him. He collapsed under her, playfully pretending to buckle under her weight. "Agh!" He groaned as he fell, the plant falling out of his opened jaws. "Oh no!" He mewed. The cattail was too far for him to reach.
She managed to get a grip on his shoulders, and Ember fell to the ground. Rain wasn't convinced it was from her own rather unsubstantial weight, though. He was a very sturdy tom, and she'd watched him in battle training many a time to remember how hard it was to bowl him over. He was playing with her, and being nice enough to let her win, too! Rain was finding herself growing a little fonder of the bold navigator, seeing another side of his usual persona.
He lost his hold on the plant, and triumphant mrrow leaving her mouth. Bunching up her haunches, she sprang clumsily off his back and on top of the cattail. A paw kept it pinned long enough for her to snag it in her teeth, the poor stem starting to droop precariously from all the roughhousing. Her tail wiggled in the air, amber eyes glowing with delight as she regarded Ember's russet form. "Catch me if you can!" was squeaked around the toy, and then she was off.
Rain could be fast when she wanted to, but she was often clumsy. At first, she got a very fair head start, deciding to make a loop around the lake because it was, after all, a game. Getting lost in the jungle was taking it a step too difficult. But there was a small outcrop of washed up rocks that bordered the water. She attempted to scramble over it, but the surface was slick from damp mosses.
With a yowl, she slid off her hold and into the lake with a splash.

The other navigator took the opportunity to pounce on the fallen cattail. She sprang off a bit awkwardly, but Ember found himself finding the grace in her movements despite the clumsy execution. She was smaller than him, and moved so nimbly without even trying to. Before long, she had snagged the drooping stem back up in her mouth, amber eyes glowing with a challenge to catch her - her tail wiggling in the air with delight.
[break][break]This was the most fun he had been able to have in moons. He had been so focused on his duties lately, the last patrol he had been on had been soured with Monarch dropping in without an invitation just to boss everyone around. The younger quartermaster had always been somewhat of a thorn in his side, but despite that he had managed to put it aside to focus on being the best navigator he could be for his tribe. Spending his free time playing with Rain without a care in the world was an amazing feeling that not even Monarch could ruin for him.
[break][break]After shooting him a challenging gaze, the she-cat hurtled forward and began pelting down the shore of the lake. Ember, still on his back, rolled back over and stood - fluffing out his russet coloured fur. He streaked after her, yowling complaints of how unfair it was she got such a long head start. He was making good time catching up on her, and before long her shape was in front of him about to scramble over some rocks that were next to the lake.
[break][break]He watched in realtime as she lost her footing on the moist moss-covered rocks and scrambled off of them and into the lake with a splash, yowling the entire time. Ember flattened his ears to his skull, his fur puffed out twice his size. The shore should be pretty shallow, but that seemed like an awkward fall. What if Rain had hurt herself? He streaked down to where she had splashed and dived into the water, the shock of the cool water hitting him as he felt his head sink under for a moment. "Rain?!" He mewed while thrashing his paws in the lake water, trying to keep his head above the water.
As she slipped into the lake water, she was shocked by how cold it was compared to the overheated temperatures of the beach. Her mouth opened to yowl, without thinking. She gulped down a large mouthful of water, making her sputter bubbles. Rain wasn't about to do something as silly as die from this, of course, but she was definitely going to look like a small wet rat as she kicked off the bottom of the lake and surfaced. Front paws flailing in a weak swim, her ears were flat as she coughed and paddled toward the reddish blob that was Ember.
She attempted to mewl she was alright, but it came out as a gurgle. Rain merely decided to lean her body against his, and allow him to help her back to the sandy shore.
When her paws touched the ground, she whined a complaint as back paw-pad burned. "I'm so clumsy.." she apologized to the tom a little warily, expecting to be yelled at for not being graceful at all and nearly hurting herself. Any other Tribemate would, surely. She was a pathetic specimen, still. Even after trying so hard..
Trying not to meet Ember's eyes, she flopped on her side and inspected the hurt pad. It was sliced, probably from kicking off awkwardly against a broken shell. It wasn't anything serious, but she quickly began to lap the sand out of it with rough strokes of her tongue anyway.
"You must think I'm a terrible Navigator.." she mumbled finally, looking up to the auburn tom with dejected amber eyes.

The large tom wasn't the greatest swimmer, but he did have the advantage that he was well built. Being strong definitely helped. He watched the tabby she-cat flail around in the water and gulp down a large mouthful of water before gurgling and paddling towards him. The tom grasped her by the scruff and helped her paddle back to the shore. They moved together, slowly but surely. Once he felt the sandy shore under his paws he breathed a heavy sigh of relief. He was worried he wouldn't be able to help her and that he would embarrass himself in front of her.
[break][break]The large tom shook out the water from his coat, the droplets spraying off of him and falling around the two. He was about to make some sort of joke, but the other began speaking first. The she-cat apologized, and he saw the previous light in her diminish almost before him. Before he could respond, though, she flopped on her side and licked a small injury on her pad. She mumbled about him must thinking she was a terrible navigator before finally forcing herself to look up at him.
[break][break]There she was, a heap of wet fur and a hurt paw - sad and sorry. He felt his heart wrench in a sort of pity and empathy he normally never took the time to understand. He sat down beside the she-cat, and shook his head. "That's not true, Rain. We were just having fun - accidents happen," He mewed softly, his voice taking on a serious tone. "This is no reflection on you as a navigator at all. In fact, I think you have a lot to offer our tribe." He added, gazing into her eyes.
[break][break]He didn't know her all that well, but he already knew how much he enjoyed being around her. It was if she was a cooling breeze on a sticky, hot day. She breathed fresh air into his day with her playfulness. Her wonderment and curiosity made him feel younger and happier than he had in quite some time. He usually focused on taking care of everyone else but never spent time enjoying himself, and Rain showed him today that it was okay to let loose. Her spirit was a light in the dark, but he didn't know how to put those thoughts into words. Instead, he gave her a reassuring warm smile.
