KRAITEYE
tidalclan ∙ warrior ∙ male ∙ 42 moons
Appearance
Description sentence:
A black and white tom with green eyes.
Appearance:
Kraiteye bears little resemble to the sea serpent which gave his name. Stocky and solid, while the tom might not be especially tall, he sports a thick layer of muscle and fat beneath his pelt. Truly, his pelt, and its markings, are the most remarkable thing about Kraiteye. He is not terribly handsome, falling more on the plain side of things. But he does look interesting, the black markings on his pelt splattering across his face and side, sometimes painting an entire foot or leaving just a few toes bare.
Most of Kraiteye's face is covered by dark fur, including his entire maw and the tops of his ears. The only streaks of white are a diamond shape on his forehead and a few strokes along his cheeks and around his left eye. This causes his white whiskers to stand out from his face, making him appear particularly expressive even when he is not. The whole of his skull is much like his body: stocky and slightly rounded. Offsetting the monotone of his pelt are his round, pale green eyes.
Personality
Positive Traits: • responsible • brave • noble | Negative Traits: • anxious • serious • awkward |
Personality:
Perhaps the only thing Kraiteye is good at is taking care of others. Kraiteye in general cares, awkwardly, persistently, and often to the detriment of his own mental well-being. Having adopted a father like role for his siblings since they were kits, Kraiteye consistently, and without fail, puts the needs of others before himself. This makes him responsible and reliable. If you need a cat to do an unpleasant task for the good of the clan, Kraiteye is your guy. He won't grumble or complain, just stacks it onto his already heaping platter of emotional and physical responsibility he takes for each and every cat that he meets.
When Kraiteye's family or clan is threatened he can be exceptionally brave. He will always defend those who can't defend themselves. However, in general he doesn't seek out conflict. Rather, he likes to consider every possible solution. This can sometimes make conversations with Kraiteye awkward or stilted. He likes to think over his words, to truly try and consider what is the best possible thing, sometimes circling around a subject anxiously in his head for long moments. Because of this he often gets labelled as "quiet" and a "good listener". But really, he often just shoves his own opinions down for the most diplomatic or positive responses.
Kraiteye on the whole tries his best to embody the idea of the noble warrior. While he doesn't feel an intense personal connection to the Gods, he does acknowledge the importance of rites and rituals. He often goes throw the motions of tradition because it is tradition. And truly, he holds tradition and the ideals of Tidalclan close to his heart, even if it makes him seem very old-fashioned or out of touch.
However, taking on the responsibility for his family and his clan exasperates Kraiteye's already anxious personality. Paranoid that allowing himself anything "selfish" will put the lives or well-being of his family at risk, he is always denying himself and putting others first. The tom often suffers from insomnia and spends most of his nights worried, wondering how he could do better for his clan, how he can protect his siblings.
In addition, the tom does not leave much room for fun in his life. He is serious, to a fault. He doesn't know how to joke around or flirt, and he gets uncomfortable when other cats try to do either with him. This also means he tends to have a hard time connecting to his youngest siblings or his peers as anything other than a psuedo-father figure.

Character Background
Family:
Ternfeather [father, alive] Clamfur [mother, dead]
Barnacleleap [brother, alive] Eelpool [sister, alive] Anemonepaw [sister, alive] Gobypaw [brother, alive]
History:
Ternfeather and Clamfur just... happened. It wasn't a mistake, necessarily, when the two became parents after a irresponsible frolic, both felines notorious flirts, but it was clear from the moment a cranky, pregnant Clamfur began growling at Ternfeather that the two were simply not going to last. Once the tortoiseshell gave birth to three mewling kits by the name of Kraitkit, Barnaclekit, and Eelkit, Clamfur cut off ties with Ternfeather altogether. She didn't want to see him, and she certainly didn't want him stinking up the nursery. Needless to say, Clamfur was a handful, and her kits grew up surrounded by her impatience. Their father, meanwhile, took the hint and stayed away, occasionally chatting with the kits when they ventured out into the camp, joining in their games.
Kraitkit didn't even realize the black and white tom was his father until someone pointed out their resemblance. Even then he didn't entirely believe it, but still, he couldn't help the nagging feeling he wanted to impress the tom. So he listened attentively to every word that came out of his mouth, and held on to promises that Ternfeather would come back again soon to play games. The three siblings conspired ways to sneak out of the nursery and surprise their father at night.
Once they actually did it, even though Kraitkit's insides churned with guilt. But instead of being met with the bright, fun laid-back tom who padded over to the nursery a few times a moon, an annoyed Ternfeather growled at them to get back to the nursery where they belonged.
Kraitkit very quickly realized that Ternfeather wasn't going to watch out for them or be the dad they wanted, so he began taking it upon himself, as the firstborn kit, to care for his siblings. This feeling truly settled when the trio became apprentices, facing, for the first time, the dangers of the jungle and the sea. Now christened Kraitpaw and serving as an apprentice under Bubblestripe, a small, cranky she-cat nearing retirement, Kraitpaw spent all his time comforting his siblings, practicing with them, and cheering for them when they made progress. His position as "dad" among the apprentices soon spread, and when he was ten moons old the trio spread to include a young she-cat named Taropaw.
At first they were simply friends, the rambunctious siblings easily accepting the lonesome she-cat into their mix. But two moons later, Kraitpaw realized that warm glow he got in his stomach whenever the she-cat looked at him wasn't the same as the way he felt about his mentor or his siblings. It was different. It was exciting. It was more than a little scary. He turned into a total fool, following her around and offering to show her advanced fighting moves. Relishing the moments when he was away from his siblings. When it was just her and him.
It wasn't until the three apprentices assisted their mentors in driving away a young crocodile that they became warriors, Kraitpaw being named Kraiteye for his ability to spot prey. As the three of them endured their vigil, the now Barnacleleap confessed that he thought he might like Taropaw. That they had been getting closer. And of course, Kraiteye thought, his brother confessed to him. Kraiteye had always been the one to support them, to hear their thoughts.
Without thinking, Kraiteye urged Barnacleleap to pursue the she-cat, even as his insides twisted. It was the right thing to do, he reminded himself.
Barnacleleap decided to wait until Taropaw also became a warrior, but once the she-cat was named Taropetal, the two became closer. While Kraiteye still talked with the she-cat in the midst of his siblings, he took pains to avoid being caught alone with her on patrol, fearful that he would somehow betray his brother. Ruin everything for him. He ignored the hurt and betrayal on the brown tabby's face.
In the end, the pair were off and on, Barnacleleap complaining to Kraiteye about Taropetal insisting that she wanted to focus on being a warrior, that she didn't want to commit to him or the idea of raising kits. Meanwhile, Kraiteye's stomach still twisted, his pelt still got itchy and hot whenever the she-cat looked at him, the crush he thought he could banish rising up at the worst possible moment.
Then, when the trio were 35 moons old, their mother passed away. She had been swimming out to one of the outcroppings of rock to help fish when she had been stung by a jellyfish, drowning before the rest of the patrol could retrieve her. While Kraiteye had never been close to the she-cat, had found her too loud, too insistent, always heaping expectations and criticisms upon him and his siblings, he still mourned her loss. Eelpool took it especially hard, and Kraiteye was reminded, once again, how he had failed his siblings, too caught up with silly thoughts of romance to be there for him the way they needed him, fully.
He launched into caring for his siblings, knitting their family back together. But Ternfeather had a talent for complicating things. The senior warrior offered his stilted condolences. But Ternfeather also had other things to worry about. Namely, mistake number two. A small litter of half-siblings, their mother, a young warrior, another victim of their father's charm and reluctance to settle down.
Although he felt like he was drowning, Kraiteye launched himself into watching over Anemonekit and Gobykit. He delivered prey to their mother and made offerings to the Gods on their behalf. He let them climb all over him, awkwardly, whenever he wasn't volunteering for patrols or sharing tongues with Barnacle or Eel. As they grew older, he tried to explain away Ternfeather's half-hearted attempts at fathering with half-truths and distractions.
His relationship with the pair has, and probably always shall, remain somewhat awkward. Kraiteye never knew what to say to them. But he tried. And a part of him couldn't help but swell with pride when they became apprentices.
