TONIGHT was not a quiet one. Insects buzzed incessantly, echoed by a chorus of cicadas and swarms of mosquitoes. The daytime heat drove most creatures to their nests, and they now took advantage of cooler temperatures at night. Newtstripe batted grumpily at a mosquito hovering aggressively around his ears. He could not sleep tonight; everything annoyed him. The insects were too loud. The other cats snored. His nest was slightly too damp.[break][break]
He groaned and stood up, briefly sweeping his gaze over the other sleeping Fighters. No one else was awake. He silently wondered to himself why he had began waking up in middle of the night so often. Was it his nest? The heat? Did a Clanmate have a habit of kicking him? He sighed. Maybe he was just getting older. Newtstripe exited the den to ease his frustration. The cool air was certainly refreshing. Perhaps he would hunt at night today and sleep during the day. [break][break]
Before he knew it, his paws had led him to Crescent Moon Beach. It was always beautiful here. The moon reflected calmly on the water. The first time he came here was with Tinystar when they were apprentices. Somehow, he missed that time, when the day would seem to go on forever and the apprentices would play like there was no tomorrow. Time went so quickly now, and rather mundanely in his opinion. [break][break]
His thoughts drifted intermittently to Tinystar. The past few moons had been exhilarating, a sudden break from his mundane routine. They had once again sparked an unquestionable chemistry, but Newtstripe was more hesitant than usual. Tinystar's leadership and her closeness with Sharksong seemed to leave no space for him. He closed his eyes, envisioning that night at this same place where he and Tinystar had agree to rekindle their friendship. [break][break]
It had not been a mistake, had it? [break][break]
It was just a brief and nostalgic moment, but strangely, when Newtstripe opened his eyes he thought he detected Tinystar's scent. Nervously, he glanced over his shoulder. Maybe she was here? It would not be unusual of her to visit this spot.
