Second, the curious TidalClan, made up of kittypets who chose to abandon their long since passed twoleg civilization ways for those of true felines. Lastly, the mysterious Tribe of Twisted Roots, hidden in the mist from others with their strange ways and a deeper knowledge of the land around them. It tasted like rain. Swiping her tongue over her muzzle, Ivytide paused as she exited her den under one of the trees. The ground beneath her wasn't damp, but she could smell it in the air around her. Her claws dug into the soft ground, pulling up a few strands of grass as she stared at a nearby tree contemplatively. The moment her daughter had become her apprentice, she had made a point of pushing her off in the direction of the other apprentices. Later on in the day, the tabby had sought out Laurelpaw's scent and tracked it down to a den where she had made her home.
Blinking owlishly and shaking her head, the deputy pulled herself from her thoughts and inhaled slightly. Where... was.. a-ha! Latching onto the distinct, familiar scent, Ivytide smoothly pulled herself off of her haunches and strode across the jungle floor. Her bright golden eyes gleamed under the treetops, the brown of her pelt rippling across various trunks and apart from the white on her coat, it was difficult to tell whether she was a part of nature or not. Every now and then, the sun would warm her coat.
She paused at the entrance of another den, her nose and tongue having lead her to this spot. Sliding through, the she-cat's eyes automatically scanned the floor with some approval. These nests were relatively fresh, probably because of Laurelpaw being a new addition. Ivytide sought out the diluted form of her daughter, eyes warming as she came to a stop next to her. Almost playfully, the mother aimed a paw to bat at Laurelpaw's ears in order to get her attention. The dark brown tabby continuously tried to bat at her mini clone's side, back, tail, and ears.
"Wake up, Laurelpaw," she murmured, eyes gleaming in the early morning light. "You don't want to be late for your first training session do you? Wake up, my dear, as I'm not going to be this easy on you in your later training."
It has been difficult to fall asleep for the newly appointed apprentice. Her stomach was in knots with a combination of excitement and anxiety that made resting deeply nearly impossible. Being one of the daughters of the JungleClan deputy, Ivytide, she felt like she had extremely high expectations of her. Becoming an apprentice was exciting, sure, but she wanted to make sure that her mother and father were proud of her. When she had been giving her apprentice name it was decided that her mother would be the one mentoring her. The good news is that I won't have to be nervous around a new mentor, she had thought once Ivytide's name rolled off of Toucanstar's tongue at the time of her apprentice ceremony.
[break][break]It didn't feel like much of a rest at all, her fitful sleep almost made her more tired than she started. Laurelpaw awoke to a paw batting at her ears. She blinked her golden eyes open with a small grunt and squeezed them shut again. The batting didn't stop, though. The paw batted at her ears, side, tail and back. Laurelpaw grumbled louder in protest and rolled over on her side to peer up as her assailant. A familiar voice murmured in the quiet darkness of the den and golden eyes opened up again to focused on the dim silhouette of her mother and mentor, Ivytide. "It's so early!" She complained, her voice quiet enough to not disrupt any others that may have been resting nearby.
[break][break]With a soft sigh she rolled onto her paws and shook her long snowy pelt out. Many within the clan commented on how similar the two were, if it wasn't for Laurelpaw's mostly white pelt they would have been exact duplicates of the other. Everything else about them was the same, though. The she-cat blinked the sleep out of her eyes and tried to gather her wits about her. Ivytide was right, she wanted to make sure she started her apprenticeship on the right paw. Being late for her very first training session wouldn't bode well for herself or Ivytide. "You're right, I'm ready," She mumbled sleepily. "What are we doing for our first session? Battling? Hunting? Patrolling? Something else?" The young she-cat shot the questions out in rapid fire and then ended with a large yawn.
Stifling her laughter at her daughter's grunts while she attempted to awake her smaller half was difficult to do. Whiskers twitching at the quiet complaint, Ivytide couldn't help the stern look she sent her daughter. "It is early," she murmured back, golden eyes settling on her daughter's gray and white form. Every time she saw Laurelpaw, it was like looking into the face of a younger Ivytide. Only Laurelpaw had a lot more white than Ivytide had.
She couldn't help the small laugh that she gave at her apprentice's sleepy questions. "We're not doing patrolling, hunting or anything like that. We're starting battle training, and if you're lucky I'll be teaching you to climb or swim later on, depending on how well you do." Peering around the two, she gestured with her tail for Laurelpaw to accompany her. "Come along, dear. Don't eat anything this morning, I'll bring something back for you later when you get back to camp."
As they slid out of the camp entrance, Ivytide gave the trees around her a rather commiserating glance. Though they had a glorious camp and territory, she often wished they were closer to the water. There was something about it that was soothing, despite her reservations about swimming. Even thinking about the motions brought a grimace to her face. "Maybe not swimming." she amended quickly. "Not today. Maybe I'll get Nightscreech or someone to help you with that part. I'm not very good at it." She returned her stare towards her daughter, then resumed walking at a slightly faster face. "I want to get the lake before the sun completely rises. Race you!"
With a slightly mischievous, warm smile aimed at Laurelpaw, the brown tabby form of Ivytide raced across the jungle floor at top speed. A careless laugh filtered through her throat, warm and bright as she challenged her daughter.
Laurelpaw sighed softly, watching as her mother twitched her whiskers in amusement at her morning antics. A small laugh came from the she-cat before she answered her questions, and for a moment Laurelpaw relished the sound. She was so fortunate to have a good, loving family. Lucky, indeed. Battle training?! Her eyes lit up with excitement. It was not so much the fact that she would be learning battle techniques that excited her so, but rather the fact that it was her first day apprenticing and she got to learn a new skill. Life was too good, it seemed.
[break][break]She got up and plodded behind her mother as she gestured with her tail to follow her. She nodded and mumbled some words in acknowledgement in response to not eating yet - even though her stomach rumbled, her excitement had it in so many knots she wasn't even sure that she would be able to digest any prey that she might eat. She padded close to her mother's heels as they left the camp. She couldn't help but notice the grimace on Ivytide's face, though. It wasn't long before the grimace was explained - swimming. She knew her mother was not a huge fan. Laurelpaw chuckled.
[break][break]"I hope Nightscreech can teach me! Then I can out-swim you!" She mewed, jokingly, giving her mom a playful bump with her head. The golden stare returned upon her once more, and her pace began to quicken. Laurelpaw barely had time to register what was going on before her mother declared a race to the falls. "You're on!" She exclaimed, laughter bubbling out of her maw as she sped up to try to outpace her mother. Their laughter echoed through the early jungle morning, and for a moment - everything felt perfect. She never wanted this day to end.
The wind generated from their burst of speed felt good in her thick coat, producing a heady feeling as she shot through the underbrush. Thorns tugged through her coat as she sped through the thick greenery, leaping over jutting roots, weaving tightly through the smaller trees, and ducking under the large roots that carved sharply over their heads was not just a race. It was a test to see how well her daughter would do, a test of endurance and agility. They would do this every morning, slowly increasing Laurelpaw's abilities until she could do so adequately or until she stopped running into trees and tripping over everything.
Ivytide skidded to a halt near the lake, her paws leaving slightly deep furrows as her paws dipped into the mud. She nearly somersaulted forward from the momentum, only able to keep herself from pitching headforward by skidding. She whirled around, eyes alight with adrenaline. She forced herself to breathe slowly and not pant from the way she pushed herself. She braced herself on all fours, tail flicking around excitedly behind her. "Attack me," she said firmly, ignoring the way how her voice came out as breathy and light. "I want to see your form,"
A wild, almost feral grin rippled across her face.
