Lost in the dense jungles of scattered islands, facing perils unimagined by their ancestors, are three warrior groups - The traditional JungleClan, descendants of the original clans carried aboard a twoleg contraption from their home long ago and breaking new ground on old beliefs. Second, the curious TidalClan, made up of kittypets who chose to abandon their long since passed twoleg civilization ways for those of true felines. Lastly, the mysterious Tribe of Twisted Roots, hidden in the mist from others with their strange ways and a deeper knowledge of the land around them. Together they must learn how to take their fate into their own paws if they wish to survive this land of erupting mountains and roaring waters.

is tail flicked back and forth as he listened to his mentor. A snort left him before he could stop himself. "Seems kind of stupid to me,"He muttered, half talking to himself as he did so, "Splitting our territories up, I mean. I know it was moons ago since the clans split, so I guess it's not really our fault - but I feel like if TidalClan and JungleClan were one massive clan prey and herbs would be a lot more abundant for us and we wouldn't have to worry about squabbling over borders." Bleakpaw allowed his gaze to drift around him as the foliage became thicker and his ear twitched when he heard Taropetal's question. What can you hear?
Bleakpaw strained his ears to listen. He could hear several types of birds overhead - and also some skittering on the ground a few lengths to his right. It sounded like a smaller creature darted across the ground. After a few moments, he turned his head back toward Taropetal. "Birds for the most part," He replied, "I heard a few things on the ground as well - nothing too big though. My guess it's either bugs or some small creature. I heard some distant screeching too...?" Bleakpaw frowned, looking up in the direction of which he heard the sound. "I've never heard it before, but it sounded like it was pretty far away."
When he tried to inhale and taste the air, he almost coughed. The air almost seemed more dense as the pair of them stepped deeper into the jungle. Through that thickness, though, he was able to catch whiff of a few scents as they drifted in front of his nose. He felt a bit frustrated that he couldn't really recognize any of the scents. It was definitely not like the shores of TidalClan's territory. "The scents here are strange too," The tom grumbled unhappily, "not just because I haven't smelled most of the things here, but something in the air around her makes them seem even weirder."
andblaze observed the young apprentice as he went forward with his task. Not wanting to distract the other, he decided to keep quiet. He could always go back later and mention anything that came to mind while watching. When Pearlpaw first started off, Sandblaze wasn't so sure how the other tom would fair. He seemed... a bit unfocused and nervous. However, once he was off - Sandblaze did notice that he seemed to be trying to concentrate more on the task at hand. The ginger tom noticed the exact moment when Pearlpaw heard his prey and he watched as Pearlpaw dipped into his hunter's crouch. Hmm. Not too bad, but it isn't very steady. He mused thoughtfully to himself. His apprentice still appeared to be nervous - almost as if he was expecting something to rise up behind him and pin him to the ground.
The tip of his tail twitched. He does think things through though. Sandblaze didn't miss the moment of hesitation on Pearlpaw's part. He realized that the apprentice had caught himself in almost giving himself away. Good catch. Pearlpaw continued forward and Sandblaze began to follow at a distance so he would be able to see the catch better. His stalking and steps still seemed a bit unsteady, but as he progressed - he did seem like he was trying to remember everything he had told him about watching where he stepped.
Sandblaze's ears perked a bit when he saw Pearlpaw's shoulders bunch up and as the apprentice launched forward, the older tom felt a rush of satisfaction. Even though his previous movements had been a bit unsteady, the pounce was really good. Pearlpaw's paws landed precisely on the mouse, trapping it beneath them.
Before he could call out and praise him, though, he noticed that while Pearlpaw did have it trapped under his paws, he was hesitating and Sandblaze could see a glint of confusion in the other eyes as he stared down at the creature. He doesn't know how to kill it. He realized. He opened his mouth, intending on giving the younger tom some instructions, but he was too late. Pearlpaw suddenly gave a yowl of surprise, his body jumping a bit when the mouse managed to squirm around and nip his paw.
The small mammal didn't hesitate to scurry off as soon as Pearlpaw's grip loosened and it was gone in a blink. As he approached, Pearlpaw turned to face him, looking rather dejected. Sandblaze offered him a reassuring smile. "It was a good first effort," He praised sincerely, "You just hesitated for too long after you trapped it under your paws. Prey will do anything it can to get away - just like we would if something tried to attack us. Do you remember how quickly I bit the back of my prey's neck? That was the step that you missed."
He turned to glance toward the direction of where the mouse had disappeared. "Unfortunately, any prey around here is likely to notice our presence soon. Would you like to try again? Or should we go explore a bit more before heading back to camp?" He wasn't sure how tired the other was after making the journey over and trying to hunt on top of it, so he figured he'd ask.

leakpaw approached the lake as he listened to Taropetal speak and as he reached the edge of it, he peered down at his reflection for a few moments. He tried not to be too irritated when she mentioned that she didnt want him to become too tired. At the moment, he felt like he could do laps around the territory - it was hard to believe that he’d get too exhausted by fishing, but it was okay. At the time, seeing the border was capturing most of his interest - hunting could wait. After watching the water ripple a bit, he turned his attention back to her when he heard her mention JungleClan. “What are Jungle cats like?” There was genuine interest in his voice as he asked, “I’ve heard stories about them of course, but that was about it.” And of course I’m not going to cross the line. I’m not flea-brained. He added silently to himself.
“Do they really scale trees like monkeys?” That thought still amused him. If that was true, he wondered if they hung on branches by their tails like them too. It wasn’t that he thought tree climbing wouldn’t be useful, JungleClan did live in the jungle after all, but no TidalClan cat really has a reason to learn to climb trees so the thought was a bit foreign to him.
As she continued on about how they weren’t hostile with them and all of that, Bleakpaw’s tail twitched a bit. Instead of adding in some sort of snide comment, though, he hesitated for a moment, another question coming to mind. “Was there a time when we were hostile with them?” He felt a bit stupid for asking. He could just see his father rolling his eyes at him - according to him, history was history and the present was the most important. Another thing that was making him grimace was all the questions he was spouting off - now he really did sound like an overly excited fledgling with too many questions.
So, instead of allowing himself to ask anymore questions, Bleakpaw focused on the scenery around them as they picked their way through the undergrowth. He certainly felt more relaxed now that he was outside of camp, and tried not to miss anything as they made their way toward the border. “It’s strange not crashing waves.” He mused, mostly to himself. Since he was so used to living by the ocean, he could still hear a ghostly echo of waves in his ears - but in reality, it was just the breeze in the leaves now and the sound of birds and other creatures. It definitely strange. The most he heard at the beach was the cry of gulls - so it was interesting hearing something else for once.
s Sandblaze returned to where Pearlpaw stood, he was pleased to see that Pearlpaw had made an effort to keep his eyes on him throughout the process of capturing the prey. He had to strain his ears a bit to hear Pearlpaw's question, but thankfully he was used to the younger tom's quieter voice now and was able to understand him. Before answering, Sandblaze set down the sugar glider by his paws so his mouth wouldn't be muffled by the fur. "Tracking. For the most part, scent is the key to finding its location - but you can also search for signs of prey as well. Such as the tracks you pointed out, loose fur, and another large thing is sound. A lot of times smaller rodents like mice will make scratching and nibbling noises if you listen carefully - so that's another way to be able to pinpoint where they are." He paused, trying to think if there was anything that he missed as he explained. "Does that make sense to you?" He wondered, curious of what inner thoughts or questions may be swirling in Pearlpaw's mind.
"If you do understand, I would like for you to try it out yourself. It's okay if you don't know any hunting techniques - I don't expect you to since this is our first time out. I just want to see if you're able to track and pinpoint where prey may be." He'd been sure to snatch up the sugar glider quieter so Pearlpaw would have the opportunity to try it himself - it wouldn't do them any good if all the prey was scared off.
He tilted his head, gesturing toward their surroundings. "And if you do and want to try your own luck in capturing it, then I definitely think you should try." It was one of his approaches he had with Sharksong a while back ago. When they first started out, Sandblaze observed him at the beginning just to see how he would go about tasks with little experience, and from there he picked out the things that would need to be worked on and improved.
hen Taropetal first told him that she would be taking him out for training soon, Bleakpaw couldn't deny that he was excited. Of course he wasn't bouncing around like an excitable kit or anything obnoxious like that, but when he was waiting to go out with her, his paws had been shifting involuntarily along with his impatience. It felt like ages until they were finally outside of the camp, but once they were, he felt his gaze wander. This wasn't the first time he was outside of camp - he had a few misadventures as a kit - but as a Fledgling, it almost felt different. After a moment, his wandering eyes finally settled on his mentor in front of him. He wasn't sure what his opinion of her was just yet. His father's constant droning on how he hoped Bleakpaw would receive a strong tom as his mentor lingered at the back of his mind, but for once he decided to squash the voice until further notice. Tinystar chose Taropetal and he highly doubt that would change anytime soon. After walking for some time, his mentor suddenly paused, nearly causing him to run into her and as he was pushing aside his annoyance, she turned to look at him - asking him the question of where he believed they were.
Bleakpaw blinked... and then blinked once more. He took a moment to glance about, but he didn't really have to look for long. The lake was literally right in front of them. Did she think he was stupid? He may have never seen the lake, but before becoming Fledgling he'd hear about it from his clanmates. Also, it was one of the closest parts of their territory by the border with Jungleclan. Perhaps she was a bit of an airhead after all. The tip of his tail twitched as he responded. "Of course I do," He left out the 'I'm not stupid part" but the way his tone was he may as well have said it, "we're by the lake - and the border is just up ahead, right?" He couldn't claim that he knew every inch of their territory, but after listening to all the stories, it was hard not to pick up a few things.
He briefly wondered how Urchinpaw and Pearlpaw were. He hadn't seen them yet today so he assumed that they were already out with their own mentors. Before his thoughts became too deep into thinking about his siblings, he nudged them aside, turning his attention back to Taropetal and the lake. The irritation from earlier seemed to have lifted a bit - replaced by curiosity as he watched the water lap at the muddy shore. The waves here were much more calmer than the crashing ones of the ocean. Those always reminded him of a roar, but the lake's reminded him more of a purr - it was much more serene than he thought it would be.
Turning his head away from the lake and toward Taropetal, he spoke once more. "Were we headed for the border?" His gaze was flashing with interest. The border with Jungleclan had always been something he wanted to visit as a kit. Of course it was much too far and he would have never made it without getting caught, but now he was only a bit of a distance away. He'd always wondered how the Jungle cats were and if they were going to visit the border today he secretly hoped they would stumble upon a patrol or something. There were moments when he'd pondered on how it would be like to live deep in the jungle like they did. Personally, he felt like he would hate it.
Too many trees, too many bugs, and too many sounds.
According to some of the stories he heard, the other clan practically lived up in the trees like monkeys and that image alone made his whiskers quiver a bit in amusement. Perhaps they were actually more monkey than cat.
Tunapaw | Bleakpaw I think it'd be super fun to have these two butt heads! His lack of a filter and tendency to call Bleakpaw out would definitely get on his nerves and likely cause him to retaliate. I think, though, Bleakpaw may tolerate him to some degree if he does prove to be a good competitor. Bleakpaw really enjoys a challenge, so in a way him not outright ignoring Tunapaw would basically be his way of acknowledging him. It depends on the situation. He may also like to pick on him too if he becomes too sensitive over anything.
Pearlpaw | Bleakpaw
The relationship between Pearlpaw and Bleakpaw will be interesting. I feel like for the most part their interactions will consist of Bleakpaw bullying and pushing Pearlpaw around like you mentioned. He will probably be a bit hard on him - telling him to push himself harder and not to be as meek. I think, though, if Pearlpaw does someday suddenly stand up for himself and their sister, Bleakpaw would definitely be taken off guard. So I feel like that would be very interesting to see play out!
Congratulations Rosa ! Your character has been approved! Please be sure to sign your character up to the TAKEN NAMES AND CLAIM and add your character to JUNGLECLAN'S ALLEGIANCES before making your first in-character post!
Okay. Woohoo. Looks like I have quite a bit to respond to on here! Thank you for your interest, guys! I'm really excited to start planning everything out. ^-^
- I'm trying to think of some ideas of what could happen between them. I'm thinking we could get them in a thread together first of all and see where things go there? Just to get the first interaction going. I also do have a funny idea in mind if you'd like to hear!
- Ooooh. I'm super excited for these two! I have a bunch of muse for Bleak and I've been looking forward for family drama! Maybe we could start with them bumping into each other somewhere - maybe after a training session or something like that and kick things off from there? I'm guessing they're not on the best terms right at the moment, so I'm curious to see how things will go now that they're fledglings. I feel like Bleakpaw is a bit on the defensive side right now - so if either Urchin or Pearl bring up the topic as to why he's changed all the sudden he'll get super snippy and harsh. Which likely will only make him and her butt heads even more.
- I would love for these two to be friends! I feel like both of their personalities would get along very well. Maybe sometime the two of them could bump into each other outside of camp - out huntinig, perhaps, or something like that and they end up engaged in conversation? That could possibly lead to them becoming friends?
Bleakpaw | Tangpaw
- I think this pair up would definitely be interesting! I have a feeling that Bleak would definitely be annoyed with her. XD Especially on the excitable and gullible part. He can be really impatient sometimes and leans more toward the serious side. So if she bouncing around he'll probably be just rolling his eyes at her. Were you looking for them to be potentially rivals or do you just want to see where things go?
Bleakpaw | Sharksong
- Hmm... I think these two would be interesting! Especially since their backgrounds are rather similar. I think Bleak would do well with someone trying to help guide him. I feel like he'll be stubborn at first, though. He sort of has his own reasons as to why he's walking in his father's pawsteps so it might take a bit for Shark to get through to him.
Eelpool | Sharksong
- This is a unique duo. Eelpool is a bit hard to connect with at first socially, but having someone who would be willing to work her out of her shell would definitely be good for her!
andblaze waited patiently as Pearlpaw worked on identifying where the scent was coming from. After a few moments of silence, the younger tom's ears perked and he dipped his head in the direction of where he believed the source was. He was slightly disappointed that Pearlpaw hadn't mentioned what he thought the prey was, but maybe that was something they simply needed to work on. He couldn't expect him to know all the scents of the jungle in one session after all. Giving Pearlpaw a nod of approval, Sandblaze said, "Good. Another thing to always keep in mind is the direction of the wind. Right now - we're both downwind of the prey we're tracking, which in turn doesn't alert it of our presence by scent." He paused. He wasn't sure how much of this Pearlpaw already knew, but either way it was a good review. "That doesn't mean it won't be able to hear or see - so you still have to be careful, of course."
The ginger tom lowered himself into a crouch, his attention now focused on the prey. "Watch me closely." Up until this point, he really had only been guiding and questioning Pearlpaw, so he felt like it may be a good idea to do a demonstration to keep him engaged. With that being said, Sandblaze began creeping in the direction of their target. His pelt quietly brushed against some reeds as he carefully stepped around them, and after stalking just a bit further, he suddenly froze, his eyes locked on a small shape ahead of him. It was small, but not a mouse - it was actually slightly larger than a mouse. It was a sugar glider. By the size of it, he assumed that it was a rather young one. Usually they tended to remain up in the trees, but as he mentioned earlier on - all creatures needed water at some point. It was facing away from them, taking sips of water. Every so often, it would glance about - checking for danger - before returning to its drink.
He waited for a moment - until he was sure the marsupial was completely focused on quenching its thirst - and with practiced stealth he moved slowly in. As he stepped lightly, he was careful to watch where he step - it'd be pretty embarrassing if he ended up scaring the prey away whilst trying to demonstrate hunting techniques.
Once he was close enough, Sandblaze's shoulder's shifted and bunched up, and with a powerful leap forward, the tom pounced down upon the surprised creature. It managed to give a startled squeak as his paws pinned it down, but before it could attempt to wiggle free, he snatched its neck up into his jaws, feeling its small bones crunch under the pressure as he clamped down upon it.
Ohh I would definitely be up for an interaction between them! Maybe after he snapped at her she decided to leave him be after that - not really one to want to start a quarrel and their exchanges have been brief ever since. But we could maybe put them in a situation now where they have to converse more than usual? Just to see how that goes? Or something like that. ^^ jouska
